How It Works

We understand that if transformation is to happen, it has to occur in all areas of life. Ndoto’s students are encouraged to dream about what they want to do in life and how that will impact their country. After they start to envision their dreams, they are given the opportunity to attend school. Ndoto students are held accountable for how they plan to use their education. They must maintain good grades, volunteer in their community, meet with a mentor, participate in a Christian community, and invest in the lives of others.

Dream    |    Volunteer    |    Invest

At Ndoto, we believe that education is a fundamental piece in the complicated puzzle of eradicating poverty. Without an education, young people will forever struggle to find regular employment, instead depending on the day-to-day sustenance of small informal businesses. In addition, attending school is an excellent way to get young people focused, working hard, and gaining exposure to new things that can expand their world view. Therefore, the central mission at Ndoto is our school sponsorship program. Most parents in the slums cannot afford the tuition and fees necessary to send their children to school. Yet this very opportunity revolutionizes their lives, especially if they are able to go to boarding school. Not only are the students receiving an education, they are building social skills, receiving three meals a day, and benefitting from a safe place to live with quiet space to study. Simply by transferring to boarding school, our student’s grades have skyrocketed grades, they have grown inches, and their personalities have developed showcasing them as confident, energetic leaders.

Once a student joins our program, they sign a covenant which holds them to a high standard of behavior and we send them off equipped for school. We have an administrator there that handles all the logistics of sending a group of students to school and also looks after their spiritual, physical, and emotional needs. Whether a student needs someone to pray for an illness in their family or becomes homeless and needs help to find a place to live, our administrator is there to respond. Some of our students are orphans who struggle when they see other kids being picked up from boarding school by their parents. This scene can stir up emotions in our orphans, but thankfully, our administrator is there to pick them up and love them. We are committed to loving the students as a parent would, whether that means providing discipline, meeting their emotional or physical needs, or simply supporting and encouraging them.

Each Ndoto student is carefully selected. Our students must agree to Christ-like behavior, have the potential for good academic performance, and dream about their future. We are not simply looking for anybody in need; we are looking for young people who will actively work at transforming their communities. To this end, we are tirelessly recruiting sponsors to support the growing number of applicants. Most students can attend school for $35 per month. Students in boarding school have the added benefit of a bed to sleep in and meals to eat for $50 per month. We also commit to encouraging our brightest students to pursue a college degree and as a result, we are in need of sponsors who are willing to commit to $100 per month. This may include assisting with a loan for starting a business or attending vocational training schools.

Once you get involved, you are matched with a student. We want you to feel a true connection with your student, and we want them to feel a connection to you. We encourage this relationship through the exchange of letters and pictures twice a year.
